Happy 4th week of Advent!

Greetings, and welcome to a truncated Friday Letter. This week, I can’t afford the five or six hours I usually devote to it.

This morning when I went across the street to the mailbox, I saw a gigantic Union Pacific track-tending truck coming.

The vehicle, which was 10 or 11 feet tall, passed close to me. I could see every detail of this behemoth; it was impressive. It carried every tool known to man. It was covered front to back with hoses and ropes, shovels, axes, picks.

It ran on ten very tall tires and wheels, with drive mechanism for every axle – a ten-wheel drive, if you will.

Inside the crew cab were four men, all dressed appropriately for the harsh Carhartt-winter cold.

As the truck roared up the street toward the tracks, all four crewmen waved at me. And smiled. And waved some more.

Life is good. I like where I am and what I’m doing, and I know how precious Laura is in all this.

Merry Christmas.
And Happy New Year.

Word of the week: Effrontery. It’s from the French, effronte’ meaning shameless or bold. In English, it means impudence, unashamed boldness, presumption. A good synonym is temerity.
